Book: The Magician’s Doll
Author: M.L. Roble
Genre: Upper Middle Grade
The Magician’s doll starts with 12 yo Natalie rushing home to pull down her mum’s board. Whenever her mum opens her psychic shop, Natalie has to endure more bullying.
But, that is the least of her problems. Her only friend, Philip, has been distant since, his father disappeared. She herself has started to see things, she doesn’t even want to. Is she losing her mind?
In spite of all this, Natalie is excited about the circus coming to their town. In her delight at the magician’s show, she volunteers to help with his act—the living doll. And all Natalie’s hopes of being normal are dashed.
Though I didn’t much like the prologue, the book grabbed my attention from chapter one till I finished reading.
The lead character Natalie makes a wonderful heroine. As a twelve-year-old, she has a lot to deal. She really wants is to blend in, and be normal. No wonder she is scared when her abilities start to show up. Though she is afraid of the changes in her life, Natalie is a strong girl who stands up to her bullies, and defends her friends.
Unlike her, Philip is excited about his abilities. He feels, they’ll help him find his father. Natalie’s new friend Louisa is a sweet girl, though there is something strange about her. The Magician’s doll is full of quirky secondary characters, who add to the fun of reading.
The author, M. L. Roble, has woven a gripping mystery with magic, and fantasy elements. As the mystery unfurls, the book keeps the reader glued to the pages wanting to know more. The author is wonderful with descriptions; her vivid imagery, and details brought life to the joys of the circus.
Magic, suspense, an eerie undertone, along with some delightful moments–The Magician’s doll would enthrall the kids.
Life is hard enough for twelve-year-old Natalie whenever her mother opens shop as a psychic.
But when Natalie herself starts to “see” things, it gets even harder.
Now she has to deal with losing control of her mind and body when information she does not seek comes to find her. Now people won’t stop asking her questions when all she wants to do is bury her head in the sand and pretend she has a normal life.
But then a big top circus rolls into town bringing with it Beausoleil the Magician, his daughter, Louisa, and his mysterious doll. Strange things are afoot with Beausoleil and his ilk, and in their wake, an eerie storm is brewing. Soon Natalie must decide whether to keep her head in the sand or whether to embrace her abilities and face the growing threat that will change her world forever.
The Magician’s doll is a fantastic thriller with a spooky undertone which will delight the children. I highly recommend it to the older kids who love magic, fantasy, and mystery.
